SIC Lookup

API change history

This is a mega dictionary of Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes that extends the 4 digit version you are probably familiar with to a 6 digit code that offers even more categorization and classification. Both the normal 4 digit code and the 6 digit code are searchable by the code itself or keywords in the description of the code. Want to find all the barber shops in your neighborhood? Start here to find the code then use the /companies API to find all the business with that code and are within 5 miles of your current location!

Get by Id

Get the description of a specific SIC code that is passed in via the URL

Try it

Request URL

Request parameters

number

A two, four, or six digit numeric Standard Identification Classification (SIC) code.

(optional)
string

Subscription key which provided access to this API. Found in your Profile. This can be presented either through this query parameter or in the request header.

Request headers

string
Subscription key which provides access to this API. Found in your Profile.

Request body

Response 200

The operation returns the id and description for the requested SIC code.

{
  "Id": "36",
  "Description": "ELECTRONIC & OTHER ELECTRICAL EQUIP MFR"
}
<Sic xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://schema.infoconnect.com">

ELECTRONIC & OTHER ELECTRICAL EQUIP MFR

</Sic>

Response 400

The server cannot process the request due to a perceived client error (e.g., invalid request value, malformed request syntax).

[
  {
    "Description": "Invalid format for the 'id' parameter, should be a 2, 4, or 6 digit Sic Code.",
    "Item": "Id"
  }
]
<Errors>
    <Error>

Invalid format for the 'id' parameter, should be a 2, 4, or 6 digit Sic Code.

id

    </Error>
</Errors>

Response 401

The request can not be completed because it lacks valid authentication credentials. Confirm that a valid subscription key (apikey) is included in either the query or header.

{
  "statusCode": 401,
  "message": "Access denied due to missing subscription key. Make sure to include subscription key when making requests to an API."
}

Response 404

Client was able to communicate with the server, but the id requested was not found.

Response 500

The Web server (running the Web Site) encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling the request by the client.
